Week 3: Monday the 15

Patricia is away.  Her sister Lola is here taking care of us for the next few days.
Classes today: received my midterm grades; scored well especially compared to many of my classmates.  Lots of new information though.
Maria Carmen talked to us after class today. She had to update our reservations in Sevilla because Kyle, Tanner, and Sierra are unable to come along, which means that Megan, Amanda, and I are flying solo.
Lunch:  Zucchini/cream soup, bread, salad, chicken, and bread, with yogurt for dessert.

Relaxed.

Then the three of us were off to the Reina Sophia with the school. It was very interesting to say the least.  It is mostly filled with very modern and surrealist works.  Picasso's Guernica is there...this was very powerful to see in person, especially after having learned the context in which it was painted.  (It is Picasso's response to the bombing of the Basque town full of innocent civilians during the Spanish Civil War, as ordered by Franco. The piece is entirely monochromatic and depicts grotesque, pain ridden chaos.)

The unfortunate thing about this excursion was that there were many, many students in attendance who were required to go on the excursion but who had no interest in being in this museum or in listening to the professor's information...this meant that they were loud, distracting, and generally rather irritating.

No pictures were allowed inside, otherwise, I could have shown you several of Dali's Enigmas, Picasso's cubism and so much more.  Sadly for all of you back home I did not wish to test the patience of the security guard's, already worn thin by loud unaware tour groups, personages who brush up against paintings (watched this happen), and that ever present individual who will argue belligerently that pictures are in fact allowed.

Museum is named for the previous Queen who spent years building up this extensive collection of especially modern art.  The museum is mostly an old hospital that has been added onto and refurbished...this makes parts of it even more eerie.

Amanda, Alice, and I all made it home separately much later than expected having each been assigned to a different group.  It was Jasmine Jiménez's birthday today and there was a party of sorts scheduled for this evening (she is a classmate of mine...from Chicago, studied law at Cambridge in England, and at the end of the summer she is beginning her time studying in an international law firm in order to become a full fledged lawyer after 7 months).  Unfortunately, by the time we had all made it home we were very late to the event.  So instead, we sent along our apologies, went to the grocery store for some food (frozen pizza for dinner and some fruit), then talked...  It turns out that my roommates share many of my ideals and hopes for the future.  I can't believe how lucky I am to have been roomed with them.  Amanda is an English Education and Spanish Education double major at Marshall (she is from Fayetteville but moved when she was still young to Charleston).  Alice is a Chinese, Public Policy, and Urban Studies triple major at Hunter College. Really interesting people!
